DAS Device Displays Smaller Capacity

This answer explains troubleshooting steps when a DAS device displays smaller capacity.

Issue:

DAS device shows smaller capacity than listed.

For example, 1TB DAS device is showing only 158GB free when review of actual files seems to show there should be 414GB free (255 GB difference).

Cause:

  • It can be caused by needing to empty the recycle bin.
  • It can be caused by corruption of the partition.

Solution:

  • Deleted files are hidden but consume space on the device until the recycle bin is emptied.
  • Can run “Disk Cleanup” to help recover hidden space.
  • Possibly fix corruption of a partition with a “Scan” of the volume.
