When installing or updating ioMemory devices, it is best to use the latest version of firmware. When installing new Fusion ioMemory devices or updating them, it is best to use the latest version of firmware that ships with the latest version of the driver.
Although on a multi-drive system it may be possible to mix firmware versions, it is not recommended or supported. Upgrade all ioMemory devices to the same firmware version.
Your device may have a minimum firmware label affixed (for example, 'MIN FW: XXXXXX'). This label indicates the minimum version of the firmware that is compatible with your device.
Do not attempt to downgrade the firmware on any Fusion ioMemory device.
Consult the Fusion ioMemory VSL Release Notes for a full list of Upgrade Notes for each release.
VMware Best Practices
- When using the vCenter Plug-in version 3.3.4 and higher, use the Update Firmware link to update the ioMemory device firmware. You reach the link in the Fusion ioSphere interface by navigating from the Configuration tab to:
All ioMemory > <ioMemory device> > Update Firmware
Download the firmware package to the machine where the vSphere client is running, and then use the Fusion ioSphere interface to browse to the package and update the firmware to a selected ioMemory device.
While it is possible to run multiple ioMemory device firmware updates simultaneously, it is a best practice upgrade each ioMemory device individually allowing the firmware update process to run to completion on the device before updating the next device.
A Duo card should be treated as two logical devices and each half should be updated separately.
- When using the vCenter Plug-in 3.3.4 and higher, update the drivers on each ESX/ESXi host being managed by the plug-in using the Update Host Software link. You reach the link in the Fusion ioSphere interface by navigating from the Configuration tab to:
Configuration Tab > All ioMemory > <ioMemory device> > Update Host Software
It is a best practice to update all ESX/ESXi hosts with the latest available drivers and latest available CIM provider.
While it is possible to run multiple ESX host software updates simultaneously, it is a best practice to upgrade each ESX host individually allowing the update process to run to completion on the host before updating the next ESX host.
