On a WD Sentinel DS series, Time Machine backups are created on the boot drive

Issue:

Time Machine backups are being created on the boot volume of a WD Sentinel DS5100 or DS6100, instead of being created on the data volume.

Cause:

Part of the First-Time Setup process of the WD Sentinel DS5100 and DS6100 requires the user to configure the data volume, prior to setting up the Share folders. Until the data volume is created, the Share folders will reside on the primary OS drive (C:\ when viewed from the WD Sentinel). Additionally, if a Mac computer is connected to the server prior to setting up the data volume, the Shares associated with the AFP will automatically be created on the boot drive as well.

Solution:

The Data Volume needs to be created prior to connecting a Mac computer to the server. This ensures that the engine that creates the Time Machine folder will create the folder in the data volume instead of the boot volume.
